"Heathcare Information Technology for Africa e.V." (HITA) thanks all members, friends and supporters this year, seeks new contributors and reports on the upcoming container shipment of high quality medical equipment and computers to Tema in Ghana.
The shipment of our first 40 foot container full of medical supplies and computers is scheduled for February 17, 2018, here we are especially proud to be able to be effective on such a scale! The preparations are of course already in full swing and we need your support right now, for example a membership at HITA can be a great Christmas present and serves a good purpose.
After an extensive trip to Ghana by Chairman Thomas Erkert and HITA expert Karsten Gareis in March 2017, we were able to establish new partnerships with the School of Nursing and Midwifery (SONAM) and the University of Ho in the Volta Region. Campus WLANs (Wireless Local Area Network) will be set up there next year, i.e. radio zones on the university campus where students can access the Internet via smartphone, tablet or WLAN-enabled laptop. In addition, five healthcare centers in the greater Ho area were visited to conduct needs assessments on missing medical equipment. These were processed and verified in detail with doctors and stakeholders, according to these evaluations we were able to subsequently design the composition of our current fundraising campaign. In addition, the data collected will provide the basis for the installation of the technology and the setup of the planned WLANs by HITA IT specialists Leonhard Dittmann and Shaun Beason next spring. The concept with the intranets and WLANs is an innovative idea; almost everyone there has at least a cheap smartphone equipped with all the basic functions. Often, however, there is a lack of infrastructure to set up such systems in the first place. HITA helps and builds up, how and where it is just necessary and this already since August 2011. However, it depends on our budget to what extent we can be active.
Professional development aid in Ghana means for us: HITA consists of a network of academics, professionals, experts and many people who simply want to support us. Through our decades-long presence on the ground, we are familiar with the prevailing problems and were a prize winner in the "Germany - Land of Ideas" award in 2010. We work with the ministry in Ghana and with universities and technical schools in Germany and locally to identify needs and respond accordingly. This is precisely why we are conducting exploratory studies with our local partners to verify these needs. In addition, we conduct expert interviews and empirical surveys to test our hypotheses or identify areas of need. In the next step, we develop proposed solutions that we test with our partners in Ghana and adapt accordingly. Our main goal is the "enabling" of our partners on site!
We are looking for more contributors and support of any kind: You can help in many ways, we are dependent on donations for the implementation of the projects. A membership is a small annual amount, but helps immensely in the overall numbers to be able to plan for the longer term. In addition, such contributions are tax deductible. You can also give a membership to someone as a gift.
In the current fundraising campaign, high-quality medical supplies and computers are sent from Germany to Tema, where they are distributed to HITA's partner institutions. To ensure that everything gets into the right hands as planned when the container arrives and that the equipment and systems are set up, HITA members will be on site for distribution and installation. We are organizing a trip in March 2018 and there is still extremely much to do before then.
