Things are moving forward!

Dear HITA members and interested parties,

You haven’t heard from us here for a while. That’s not because we haven’t done anything, on the contrary, it’s because we have so much to do at the moment. As you know, we want to send our first container with hundreds of computers to Ghana in mid/end August so that it arrives safely in Ghana before our second trip to Ghana in mid-October this year.

Over the last few weekends, members of the association and CMS teachers have started to inventory, install, pick and pack computers and accessories.

With hundreds of PCs and laptops, monitors and other accessories, it is important to maintain an overview. It is already important to take a detailed inventory of each device so that the allocation and distribution in Ghana can be easily organized later. With a total of more than 1,500 computers throughout Ghana, a structured maintenance system is essential. We need to start thinking now about how we can ensure the procurement of spare parts for the computers and components for the coming years.

Caro and Daniel install 12 personal computers in parallel. It is important to prepare all computers in Germany so that a basic configuration is installed. All data on the PCs, laptops and tablets was completely deleted in advance. All computers were cleaned and upgraded if necessary.

Meanwhile, the other helpers pack the inventoried, picked and pre-installed computers onto pallets, which are then transported by elevator to “our” warehouse in the basement of the Caro Mierendorff School (CMS). We would also like to take this opportunity to say a big thank you to the school management for temporarily allowing us to use the basement room as a warehouse. We would especially like to take this opportunity to thank the janitor, Mr. Rabenseifner, for his tireless efforts. Without his help and willingness to always support us, the whole thing would not be possible.

Helping is fun

A first small success for us was the first pallet loaded with 40 PCs for a computer training room in Ghana. For the container that we want to send to Ghana, we have to load our donations onto Euro pallets. As we want to pack our donations sustainably, they are placed next to each other on a pallet or stacked on top of each other in boxes (see picture on the right). Stretch wrapping the pallets with stretch film is crucial. We use this to bundle our palletized donations and hold them firmly together so that they do not fall off the pallet and can be transported safely.

The warehouse is filling up with packed pallets, but we still need PCs, laptops, monitors and peripherals. We still need many smaller and larger donations to gradually get closer to our overall goal of 1,600 computers, which we urgently need to modify our existing and equip new PC labs in Ghana. In addition to the urgently needed donations in kind, we are now “only” missing around € 20,000.00 in financial resources to enable us to transport the donations to Ghana and install the equipment on site.

We are working together with our project partners from CMS to raise these costs. We are dependent on your financial donations. Please get in touch with us (spenden@hita-ev.org). You can find out how you can support us at(https://hita-ev.org/unterstuetzen/).

If you now feel like helping out, you can do so with us on the following days.

These activities include installing computers, picking orders, and packing. On the final day, August 23, 2025, the containers will be loaded, sealed, and a farewell party will be held.
